CSX Transportation (reporting mark CSXT) simply known as CSX, is a class railroad that was formed by the merger of Seaboard Coast Line System (which was a merger of Seaboard Coast Line, and Louisville and Nashville Railroad) and the Chessie System (which was a merger off Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and the Western Maryland Railroad). The corporation holding company was formed in 1980, but the railroads did not merge until 1987.
In 1999, with the break up of CONRAIL, CSX acquired about half of that railroad, with Norfolk Southern acquiring the other half.
