Introduction
If you are a railfan, if you love riding trains, and taking pictures of them, if you love experiencing the once common being near an engine terminal with living steam locomotives, if you love scenic mountains, OR if you’ve never experienced any of this but want to, Colorado is the place you need to visit. Colorado is literally jammed packed with tourist railroads, museums and scenery. It is one the “Railfanning Heavens.” You can literally start at any end of the state and jump from one attraction to another over the course of a couple of weeks.
So with that here is the list of all the “must see” Colorado railfan attractions:
Top Attractions
Ft. Collins Municipal Railway, Fort Collins, Colorado. Step back in time and experience the charm and nostalgia of the Fort Collins Municipal Railway! This historic attraction offers visitors a chance to ride on original, restored trolley cars from the early 1900s, taking in the beauty of the surrounding area while learning about the rich history of Fort Collins. Colorado Railroad Museum, Golden Colorado, just west of Denver.
The Colorado Railroad Museum is a must-visit destination for railroad enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Several of the heritage railroads that were located in various parts of the state are represented here. And the nice part is that they have some equipment that is operational. The museum is literally a full size model railroad.

Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, Cripple Creek Colorado, on the west side of Pike’s Peak. A small 2 foot gauge train that travels over the old Midland Terminal Railroad road bed, south out of Cripple Creek, along a mountainous area, where old mikes exist.

One nice thing is that there are a couple of businesses that offer tour packages through Colorado. They may not stop at all of these attractions, but they stop at several of them.

They are offering several tours that include Colorado. One tour they offer this October includes several Western States and Colorado.

Western Rail Adventure
Another company that is offering Colorado rail tours is Country Travel Discoveries.
They had been under contract with the 20th Century Railroad club to host these trips.
Sadly, the 20th Century Railroad club has shut down. But the tours are still being offered.
They have three dates this year where they are offering Colorado tours.

September 10-17

Possible Itinerary
If you are a do-it-yourself person, then here’s a potential itinerary:
- Fly into Denver, rent car
- Drive up to Ft. Collins, ride the trolley
- Drive to Georgetown, ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad
- Drive to Colorado Springs, ride the Manitou & Pike’s Peak Railway
- Drive to Cripple Creek, ride the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad
- Drive to Leadville, ride the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad
- Drive to Canon City, ride the Royal Gorge Route Railway
- Drive to Antonito, ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
- Drive to Durango, ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
- Drive to Golden, visit the Colorado Railroad Museum.
- Drive back to Denver, take the California Zephyr to Salt Lake City
- Fly home from Salt Lake City
Note: Order of attractions, how many you see, amount of time for traveling, where to spend the night, and what type of car to rent, are totally up to you.
This CAN NOT be done in a week unless you are pushing things.
Colorado is a big state. As travelers we see leave enough time to enjoy things. Rushing through things may not be desirable.

In addition to riding these tourist railroad, Amtrak, and museums, there are other sites around the state that may be of interest to the railfan.
- Denver South Park & Pacific Depot and Roundhouse Como, Colorado. The folks at the South Park Rail Society are basically re-building this area. Check out their web site:

- Denver South Park & Pacific Alpine Tunnel, Colorado. This historic tunnel under the continental divide has access to both the east and west portals. But the tunnel has collapsed. There is some buildings and rail still in place.
- Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation Rock Island roundhouse, Colorado Springs Colorado. These folks are about preserving trolley cars. They’re using the old Rock Island roundhouse. https://coloradospringstrolleys.com/
- Colorado Midland Roundhouse, Colorado Springs, Colorado. The old roundhouse has been turned into a retail mall.
- UP Roundhouse, Hugo, Colorado. http://www.hugoroundhouse.org/
- Limon Heritage Museum & Railroad Park. Limon is where the Rock Island used to split one of their flagship trains, the Rocky Mountain Rocket, into two with one section going to Colorado Springs, the other going to Denver via the Union Pacific. The Depot has some railroad equipment.

- Old Depot Square, Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs D&RG depot has been transformed into a retail center
- Pueblo Union Depot, Pueblo, Colorado. The Depot has been transformed into an event venue. http://pueblouniondepot.net/
- Right next door is the Pueblo Railway Museum, which has several pieces of railroad equipment.
- Driving the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad right-of-way. Highway 67 north out of Florence travels along the F&CC right of way through Phantom Canyon.
- Driving the Gold Camp Road East out of Victor. The Gold Camp Road travels along the Colorado Springs & Cripple Creek District Railroad right-of-way.
- Alamosa, Colorado. Here is where the standard gauge and narrow gauge D&RGW trains used to switch off. There used to be a massive shop here. The D&RGW depot is still here, and there is other equipment in town, because of the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, which is currently not operating.
- Ridgeway Colorado. This was the north end of the Rio Grande Southern railroad, which stopped operating in 1953. The southern end was Durango. In town is the Ridgway Railroad Museum, which has several pieces of railroad equipment, including a Galloping Goose, that operated over their loop of track. http://www.ridgwayrailroadmuseum.org/
